The following are the "how to's" of the Signature Elk Calling System! If you want and need to come back as often as you want, or need to, to master the lip position and to make the notes/sounds you want and like.
If you want, you can email me at bjhunt5@aol.com with specific questions about your location and or hunting styles, or you can call me at; 970.988.3490 and i will be happy to make the sounds for, or with, you so you can learn to make just the sound you want. Have fun, good luck and God Bless!
1 - the green note marker is set to make the calf sound with your lips just touching the green ring, very little pressure needed.
2 - make the eeeeooouuuu sound with yhour lips away from the call, then just put your lips onto the mouthpiece sealing off the air flow
3 - press your lips up next to the call ring and make that same lip motion on the reed
4 - if you wish, you can move your lips up and down on the mouthpiece while using light lip pressure, that will help make the eeeooouuu sound
1 - open reed calls are lip sensitive
2 - press gently on the mouthpiece pinching the reed against the mouthpiece and blow air through the call, don't worry about notes just get sound
3 - as you get sound, gently press your lips tighter to the mouthpiece until the call stops making sound
4 - let the lip pressure off enough that you get sound again
5 - the tighter you press your lips on the call and the more air pressure you blow through the sound will increase in volume and pitch
6 - lip location on the mouthpiece will change pitch, lip pressure volume
.
1 - if the green marker is in place, simply press lightly on the reed (dont pinch it flat to the mouthpiece just light pressure)between the marker and the base of the call
2 - if the green marker is not in place, move your lips to about half way down the mouthpiece, and press just enough to get the call to make sound, that pitch becomes lower the more you move your lips closer to the base of the call
3 - once you have the more mature note/pitch you want just continue to blow the air volume you want to get the volume you want
4 - remember, the more volume of air the move volume in sound
5 - the further away from the base of the call you pinch the reed against the mouthpiece the higher the pitch
This sound is not one note, but a combination of multiple notes slured together.
1 - start with pressing the reed to the mouthpiece like you did to make the cow sound
2 - without removing your lips, move the call so your lips move up and down the mouthpiece always staying in contact with the mouthpiece
3 - always keep air flow so you get a string of notes
4 - the estrus is a whiny sound, like crying, a moaning sound but on the reed
5 - this sound can last from a few seconds to 30 seconds in the wild
6 - they tend to drag this sound out
7 - start with the higher pitch and move down up a bit and down - think moaning
8 - you can't do this sound with the green marker in place
The buggle is like the cow estrus sound, its multiple notes slurred together. Unlike the cow estrus, the buggle starts low, goes hi and then comes to low again!
1 - make sure the green call marker is off the call
2 - place your lips over the reed and press it onto the mouthpiece about 1/3-1/2 of the way from the tip to the base
3 - with med pressure get a low note then sliding the mouthpiece out of your mouth to create a higher pitch, increase the air volume to make a louder hi note
4 - pause for a few seconds at your highest note (each call will have a different hi end pitch)
5 - keeping the notes going, begin to slide the mouthpiece into your mouth toward the base making notes as you slide it
6 - stop making the notes when your back to the original position you started with
7 - this call won't make the raspy gravely sound at the end of the call like a true buggle, but you can come close to that using your voice
There are actually 3 ways with this call to mute the sounds! Muting the call makes the herd sound more distant, or that your close and you want a more quiet call.
1 - cupping your hands around the end of the call as you make the call will cut the sound down based on how tight you cup your hands
2 - use the cork - insert the cork into the hole at the base of the call and then make the sounds as you normally would.
3 - use the wood plug - this is a more perminant method for volume control. If you use the call a lot muted, then this is the way to go just press it into the hole at the bottom of the call and it will cut the volume - then use the call as normal
Leave the call marker in place where you like the calf sound!
1 - making the calf sound as normal
2 - rest your thumb on the reed between the marker and the base of the call
3 - as you call gently press the reed with your thumb - it will change the pitch as soon as the reed touches your mouthpiece
4 - continue making the call eeeooouuu sequence just like normal and toggle the thumb on and off the reed as you press the reed to the mouthpiece
5 - you should notice the same eeeooouuu noting but at a different pitch as you blow air through the call
